Adwords and SEO are like peas in a pod
by Pete Sutton
Often there is a distinct disconnect between search engine optimisation (SEO) and adwords strategy. With click through rates (CTR) being at their highest in organic search results, there is a tendency, particularly for larger companies, to focus purely on SEO without considering implementing an adwords campaign first. In these cases there can be a lot of time wasted in trial and error before the campaign is successful. On the other side of the coin, smaller companies often don’t believe they can compete with the larger companies in search engine rankings. Adwords is then used as an alternative with immediate success and so SEO strategy gets neglected. In these instances there is an abundance of intelligence and money going to waste!
Adwords and SEO are like peas and carrots, fish and chips, Batman and Robin, FIFA and bought votes... Sure, on their own they may be fine, but you really need the two of them working together to get the job done properly!
By using adwords you can gain incredible intelligence that can be utilised in your SEO strategy. More often than not, people go straight into the keyword tool and try to compete for the terms with the most volumes. By tracking and reporting on your adwords campaign, it is easy to identify the keywords that work best for your site. You can see which keywords have the highest click through rates, which content best resonates with searchers and ultimately which keywords are the most profitable. You may be surprised at what you find along the way! There will likely be niches that arise that are more profitable than highly competitive terms. These are little pockets of gold, as you can take this intelligence and optimise your website with it. As a bonus, you will find it’s also easier to achieve page 1 rankings!
For those smaller businesses already using adwords who don’t want to compete with larger websites in SEO rankings... Don’t! Work smarter! Use the knowledge that is sitting in your adwords reports to your advantage and optimise your website to dominate the less competitive yet highly profitable niches.
